The 2023 Nobel Prize in Chemistry was awarded for the discovery and development of quantum dots. These are nanoparticles so tiny that their size determines their properties.

“These particles have unique properties and are now spreading their light from TV screens and LED lamps. They catalyze chemical reactions, and their transparent light can illuminate tumor tissues for the surgeon,” the Nobel Committee said in a statement.

Scientists who received the prize are US representatives Mungi Bawenda and Louis Bruce and Soviet-American scientist Oleksiy Yekimov. Scientists use quantum dots to create colored light. In the future, they believe, quantum dots will facilitate the creation of flexible electronic devices, miniature sensors, thinner solar cells and, possibly, encrypted quantum communication.

The 2023 Nobel Prize in Physics was awarded to scientists Pierre Agostini, Ferenc Krause and Anne L’Juliet for “experimental methods that generate attosecond pulses of light to study the dynamics of electrons in matter.”
Scientists Drew Weissman and Katalin Carico received the Nobel Prize for the work that formed the basis of mRNA vaccines against the coronavirus. The prize-giving ceremony was held on October 2 in Stockholm.
